Biography
Born July 18, 1929 in Cleveland , Ohio , in a large family. As a child, he was fond of the work of Paul Robson , was going to become an opera singer. Since 1933 he studied piano. In 1943, he began to engage in boxing, in 1949 he became the Alaskan middleweight champion. During the Second World War he served in the Pacific Fleet.
In 1951, he began his career as a musician in collaboration with guitarist Tini Grimes . During the performances, he shocked the audience with his unusual stage costumes (Scottish kilt , leopard-skin clothes, tin cans, a turban , etc. tied to the wrists). In 1952-1953, as part of the Grimes group, he participated in the recording of several songs.
The first solo recordings began in 1954 with the songs “Baptize me in wine” and “ I Put a Spell on You ”, which made him popular all his life. The recordings were made in an extravagant manner typical of Hawkins - with hoarse cries, etc. Later on, he refined his style by trying to rewrite I Put a Spell on You in a state of extreme alcoholic intoxication with equally drunk musicians. The record gained great popularity in the conservative USA of the Eisenhower era. In the same manner ("ghoul-rock" coined by Hawkins; from the English ghoul - vampire) new songs were recorded ("Constipation Blues", "Orange Colored Sky", "Feast of the Mau Mau" and others), however, the popularity of " I Put a Spell on You ”they did not reach. Over the next decades, Hawkins has toured extensively throughout the United States and Europe. Serge Gainsbourg writes Hawkins song of dedication “Mambo niam niam”, Nina Simon performs “I Put a Spell” for her album, imitative groups appear. However, due to the advent of new musical styles and popular groups, Hawkins' fame gradually faded.
The popularity of “I Put a Spell on You” revives Jim Jarmusch ’s film “ Stranger Than Heaven ” (1984). Skrimin Jay Hawkins begins to tour actively, acts in films ( Merge of two moons , Mysterious train ), performs together with The Clash and Nick Cave . He writes cover versions of Tom Waits ’s songs “Heartattack and Vine” and “Ice Cream Man” (the first of which went into Levi Strauss & Co.’s commercials) and Bob Marley ’s I Shot The Sheriff . In turn, cover versions of Hawkins songs are recorded by Marilyn Manson , Diamanda Galas and others.
Hawkins died on February 12, 2000, after an aneurysm- related operation.
