Biography and Creativity
Born in the Polish noble family of the coat of arms of Andro de Buoy . Parents were teachers. He studied at the first Richelieu and 2nd gymnasiums of Odessa , whose course he graduated in 1850. In 1855 he graduated from the medical, and in 1860, the historical and philological faculty of the Kiev Imperial University of St. Vladimir with a candidate ’s degree.
Before the Polish uprising, he was one of the leaders of Polish society at Kiev University, but refused to participate in the uprising. The official break with the gentry and the Polish movement was his article “My Confession”, published in 1862 in the journal Osnova .
In 1861, he joined the so-called " busters ", seeking to draw closer to the Ukrainian people. Later he became an outstanding figure in the Ukrainian national movement, was one of the organizers of the Kiev Gromada .
In 1863 - 1880 VB Antonovich worked as the editor-in-chief of the “ Provisional Commission for the Analysis of Ancient Acts” in Kiev. He directed the publication of the Archive of Southwest Russia . Issued several volumes with introductory monographs:

He was awarded a master's degree (1870) in Russian history and was assigned to the department of Russian history at the Kiev Imperial University of St. Vladimir. He was awarded the degree of Doctor (1878) of Russian history and was elected to the post of full professor at the Department of Russian History of the University of St. Vladimir . He served as dean of the Faculty of History and Philology (1880–1883) [7] .
He carried out extensive research work on the history of the Lithuanian-Russian state , following which he published a special collection of Monographs on the History of Western and South-Western Russia (Volume 1, 1885 ).
VB Antonovich also wrote a number of works on archeology: “Antiquities of the Southwest Territory. Excavations in the country of Drevlyans ”( 1893 ),“ Archaeological maps ”of Kiev ( 1895 ) and Volyn ( 1900 ) provinces. Exploring the social issues of history, V. B. Antonovich considered them in the plane of action of abstract principles - communal, squad, princely. \
He is considered the founder of archeology (in particular, he prepared the holding of several All-Russian archaeological congresses) and numismatics (he founded the Münzkabinet , in which thousands of coin samples from different periods were displayed). The archaeological research carried out under his leadership in Volyn, in particular, made it possible to significantly replenish the funds of the Volyn diocesan ancient storage [8] .
Antonovich explained the historical phenomena by the peculiarities of the natural environment and the historical context. He paid special attention to the anthropological , psychophysical, domestic, and cultural features of the individual, including the Ukrainian people. Thanks to this approach, Antonovich’s assessments of the historical past were close to European ones. He used the materials of archaeological excavations as a source for historical reconstructions of antiquity and restoration of the economy and way of life of past times. [9]
In 1874 - 1875 V. B. Antonovich published in Kiev, together with M. P. Drahomanov , two-volume “Historical Songs of the Little Russian People”.
Without exaggeration, Antonovich can be called the “father” of the majority of Little Russian [6] historians of Ukraine of that time: his students were such scientists as Bagaley , Golubovsky , Grushevsky , Danilevich , Dashkevich , M. V. Dovnar-Zapolsky , Linnichenko , V. G. Lyaskoronsky and others.
