Mikmaki ( English Míkmaq [ miːɡmax ]), self-name Lnu , pl. h. Lnu'g , literally "people" [1] - the Native American people living in the north-east of New England , in the Atlantic provinces of Canada and on the Gaspe Peninsula in Quebec . The current population reaches about 40,000 people, of which only about 11,000 speak the Mikmak language (lnuysimk) of the Algonkin family . [2] [3] [4] Previously, the Mikmak language used the Mikmak hieroglyphic script , it is currently written in the standard Latin alphabet (unlike most languages of the Indians of Canada using the Canadian syllabic ).

For some time there was an alliance between Mikmak and Boeotuks , however, a random conflict (killing a Beotuksky by a Mikmak boy in a quarrel) led to a major war in which the Mikmaks defeated and drove the Beotuks from part of the land [5] .
