Darjeeling-Himalayan Railway was recognized as a World Heritage Site in 1999 . The Nilgiri Mountain Railway was added to the list of World Heritage Sites in 2005 , and the Kalka-Shimla Road in 2008 .
These roads were recognized as World Heritage with the wording: "An outstanding example of a bold, ingenious technical solution to the problem of creating an effective rail link in rugged, mountainous terrain."
