Elixir ( Latin Elixir from the Arabic. الإكسير " al-iksir " - in turn from the Greek. "Xḗrion" - the philosopher’s stone [1] ) is a non-dose liquid dosage form , which is a mixture of alcohol-water extracts from medicinal plant materials with the addition of drugs, sugars and flavorings. [2]
Elixirs are externally similar to tinctures , have a darker color and a thicker consistency. In the past, elixirs were an extensive group of galenic preparations.
In medical practice, only one official preparation of industrial production is currently used - breast elixir, or licorice (Elixir pectorale) [3] .
