The Namgyal Institute of Tibetology is a Tibetan museum and Tibetological Center in Gangtok , Sikkim , India . He has the largest collection of Tibetan statues, altars, a tank , masks and other objects of Tibetan art outside Tibet.
The Institute was founded in 1958 with the goal of drawing attention to the study of religion, history, language, art and culture of the Tibetan cultural area, which includes Sikkim.
The cornerstone of the Institute was laid by E.S. Dalai Lama XIV on February 10, 1957. The institute was officially opened by the Prime Minister of India, Jawaharlal Nehru, on October 1, 1958.
A number of the Institute’s projects are devoted to “visual anthropology”, including the social history of 60 Sikkim monasteries and the digitization of documents related to it, as well as the digitization and popularization of old photo archives related to Sikkim.
