Biography
Cetan Anand was born on January 3, 1915 in Lahore [1] [2] British India (now Pakistan ) or according to other sources in Gurdaspur [3] , Punjab in the family of a wealthy lawyer Pisori Lal Anand. His two younger brothers Dev and Vijay also subsequently connected themselves with the film industry. His sister is the mother of director Shekhar Kapoor . After graduating from Lahore State College, he worked for a while at the BBC and taught history at Doon School in Dehradun . In the early 1940s, Chetan wrote a screenplay for a movie about Ashok the Great and went to Bombay to sell it. There he met with the director Fani Mazhumdar who offered him a role in the 1944 Rajkumar film.
In 1946, he made his directorial debut with the film " City in the Valley ", which won the " Grand Prix " (along with ten more films) of the first Cannes Film Festival . It was one of the first Indian films to receive international recognition. Actress Camini Kaushal and composer Ravi Shankar debuted in the film.
In 1949, together with his brother Dev Anand, Chetan founded Navketan Productions , under the banner of which was released his next film, The Examiner, in based on the play of the same name by N.V. Gogol , with Virgin Anand and Suraya starring. The film was a moderate success. Then followed the "Hurricane" and "Taxi Driver" . Taxi Driver was the first box office success for Chetan Anand and remains the most profitable Navketan Productions film to this day.
On the set of the film "Fantosh" Disagreements arose between the brothers, and in 1960 Chetan founded his own production company Himalaya films . In 1964, he directed one of the earliest Indian films about the war , Reality, in . Filmed after the Sino-Indian Border War , Reality won the National Film Award as the second best feature film of the year.
In his 1966 film, The Last Letter, in debuted the future "star" of Bollywood Rajesh Khanna . Subsequently, having shot Rajesh in his film “The Other Side of Love” whose plot is based on the idea of reincarnation , he provided him with a temporary return to its former popularity.
In addition to his 17 films, he also participated in the creation of the Param Vir Chakra series, broadcast on DD National in 1988.
Personal life
Chetan was married to Uma Anand (as a girl Chatterjee) [4] , with whom he had been friends since childhood [5] . Uma acted as an actress and screenwriter in her husband's first few films. Two sons were born in their marriage: Ketan and Vivec. In 1964, Uma left her husband for the theater producer and art collector Ebrahim Alkazi [6] . Custody of the children remained with their father [6] .
Since 1967, Chetan Anand has been in a relationship with actress Priya Rajvansh debuted in his film "Reality" [6] . Their relationship lasted until his death.
