Biography

Born in the family of a surveyor and teacher. After the Ovsyannikov family moved to Moscow , in 1937 Lev Vasilievich graduated from high school and entered Moscow University . In the fall of 1941 he graduated from the Faculty of Mechanics and Mathematics of the University (accelerated graduation), a student of D. E. Menshov .

In the fall, he participates in the construction of defensive structures on the outskirts of Moscow (the norm is 1.5 cubic meters of earthwork per day). Then - sent [1] as a student to the Leningrad Air Force Engineering Academy (LVVIA). In 1945 he graduated with honors from the LVVIA, thesis “High-altitude fighter aircraft”. In the same year he became an associate of the Academy, and in 1948 he defended his thesis.

From 1948 to 1953 L. Ovsyannikov conducts teaching at the LVVIA and at Leningrad University. The first scientific works of L. Ovsyannikov, performed in the late 1940s - early 1950s , relate to gas dynamics, to the theory of transonic flows. He laid the foundation for a new scientific field of paramount scientific importance for the analysis of mathematical physics problems - group analysis of differential equations. In 1953 - 1956 he worked in a research team led by academician M. A. Lavrentiev . In 1958 , L. Ovsyannikov was awarded the Lenin Prize for work in the field of instrumentation, which contributed to increasing the country's defense.

In 1959, at the invitation of Academician M. A. Lavrentyev, he transferred to work in the newly created Siberian Branch of the USSR Academy of Sciences in Novosibirsk and became one of the first employees of the Institute of Hydrodynamics of the Siberian Branch of the Academy of Sciences. In 1961 , L. Ovsyannikov defended his thesis for the degree of Doctor of Physics and Mathematics. In 1966-1969 he was dean of the Faculty of Mechanics and Mathematics of Novosibirsk State University . At the Institute of Hydrodynamics, he goes from a senior researcher to a director ( 1976 - 1986 ), the head of a large research team. In 1964, L. Ovsyannikov was elected a corresponding member, and in 1987 - a full member of the USSR Academy of Sciences.
