History
The history of the Campari begins in 1860, when Gaspare Campari ( Italian: Gaspare Campari ), who worked as a maitre liquoriste (fr.) (Specialist in mixing alcoholic beverages) since 1842, began serving this spicy-bitter drink of catchy red color in his " Cafe Campari "in Novara . In the same year, Gaspare Campari founded the company Gruppo Campari to produce and distribute his drink, then he moved to Milan . In 1904, campari production was started at a plant in Sesto San Giovanni near Milan [2] .
Under the leadership of David Campari, son of Gaspare, the company began to export the drink to Nice and the cities of the French Riviera . The romantic love story of David Campari for singer Lina Cavalieri [3] [4] is associated with the start of sales of campaigns in Nice. Then the distribution of the beverage expanded to other countries. Campari is currently distributed in more than 190 countries and is the main product of Gruppo Campari [2] .
Composition
Campari has a strong aroma and a distinct bitter taste characteristic of bitter. Tasters note in the aroma earthy and woody notes of blackberry, vine, moss, forest litter and stones. The taste is described as spicy, with notes of roots, quinine, honey, citrus peel, ash and earth [5] .
The recipe is the secret of the company . Campari is made as a tincture based on aromatic herbs and citrus fruits , then the resulting tincture is diluted with sugar syrup, water and dyes are added. According to various estimates, from 40 to 68 ingredients are included in the recipe, including myrtle leaf orange [1] , calamus , yellow gentian [5] , cascarolla and, possibly, rhubarb finger [6] .
The characteristic bright ruby color of the campari was given by the food coloring carmine obtained from cochineal . Since 2006, cochineal has been replaced by artificial dye [7] .
The fortress of pure campari is 20.5–28%, but a variety of “ Campari Soda ” is produced, where the fortress is 10%.
Advertising
Kampari was the first alcoholic beverage company to actively brand its product [4] . Campari is known for its tradition of advertising posters [8] .
Advertising campaign posters were created by artists and designers such as Fortunato Depero , Leonetto Cappiello , Adolfo Hohenstein , Marcello Dudovich , Marcello Nizolli . Milton Glaser . Some of these posters have become notable landmarks in the history of design and art deco [9] [10] . For Fortunato Depero, his work with Campari served as a starting point for the publication of the almanac “Futurist Campari” with the manifesto of advertising art formulated in it [11]
The product image is based on passion and sexuality, these two themes are played out again and again in the advertising of the Campari brand [2] .
Today, Campari attracts people such as Olga Kurylenko , Eva Mendes , Jessica Alba , Salma Hayek , Benicio del Toro , Penelope Cruz to advertise the drink [12] .
Wine Enthusiast magazine has repeatedly noted camparias in its reviews [13] . The site Proof66 included the campari in the ranking of “20 best liquors in the world” [14] .
Use
A bitter drink increases appetite, and therefore campari is traditionally used in its pure form as an aperitif [1] , as well as in cocktails and as an ingredient for desserts [15] . It is an integral part of official IBA cocktails such as Negroni and Americano , as well as spritz , camparina ( caipirinha with campari, instead of cashmere ) and garibaldi [1] .
