Biography
Early Years and Education
Pahor was born in the city of Postojna , spent his childhood in Nova Gorica . He graduated from the sociological faculty of Ljubljana University in 1987.
Political Activities
From his youth Borut Pahor was interested in politics, at school and university he was an activist of the Komsomol. In 1989, he became one of the founders of the new democratic movement in Slovenia, which aimed to combat the monopolization of political life in the Union Republic by the Union of Communists of Yugoslavia .
In the Parliament of Slovenia
In 1990, he was first elected to the Slovenian parliament . By the end of the 1990s, Pahor became one of the most prominent leaders of the center-left wing of Slovenian politics.
In 2000, Pahor’s party joined the ruling coalition led by Prime Minister and Liberal Leader Janez Drnovšek . Pahor was elected chairman of the National Assembly (lower house) of the State Assembly of Slovenia and remained in this position for four years. In 2004, Pahor was elected to the European Parliament .
Slovenian Prime Minister
In 2008, the Social Democrats, led by Pahor, won the parliamentary elections [1] . Following the results of the November 11, 2008 elections, Pahor formed a cabinet that he chaired for four years.
On September 20, 2011, Pahor’s cabinet received a vote of no confidence [2] [3] .
In the early parliamentary elections held on December 4, 2011, the Social Democrats , led by Pahor, took only third place, tripling their representation in the legislative assembly. In June 2012 Pahor left the post of party leader.
President of Slovenia
Pahor nominated for the 2012 presidential election . In the first round, he took first place, gaining 41.9%, while incumbent president Danilo Turk gained 37.2% [4] [5] . According to the results of the second round of elections held on December 2, Borut Pahor won a landslide victory, gaining 67.44% of the vote [6] .
In the presidential election on November 12, 2017, he was re-elected President of Slovenia.
Personal life
Married to Tan Pechar, has a son, Luka. In addition to the native Slovenian language, he is fluent in English , French , Italian , Serbian and Croatian .
