Barzaz Breiz ( Breton ballads ) is a collection of Breton songs published by the Viscount Theodore Hercard de la Wilmarke in 1839 (under the pseudonym Kervarker). The book stimulated public interest in the study of Breton and Celtic culture.
Editions
The first edition was subtitled in French: ... compiled and published with a French translation, explanations, notes and original tunes by T. de la Wilmarke . It was implemented in two volumes
Then the material was processed by the compiler and a new version was published in 1845. In 1867, the book was first published in one volume (sixth edition). The last lifetime edition (ninth) was carried out in 1893. The latest edition to date has been made in 1999.
Numerous translations of Breton ballads (into English, German, Polish, Italian and other languages) are based on the 1867 edition.
Impact
The texts collected in Barzaz Breiz are actively used both by folklore groups and folk rock performers: Alan Stevell , Tri Yann , Dao Dezi , etc.
