Biography
Born into a noble family in the Mosalsky district of the Kaluga province . He studied at St. Petersburg University, then at the Academy of Arts in the class of landscape painting. Outstanding works of that time:
- "The Storm in the Kaluga Province" (1859) - awarded the Small Silver Medal,
- "Winter Morning" (1860) - awarded the Big Silver Medal,
- βView from the Petrovsky Islandβ (1861) - awarded the Small Gold Medal.
For the final picture "The Village of Zhely of the Kaluga Province" (1864) received the title of class artist of the first degree and the Big Gold Medal .
After graduating from the academy, he lived for three years in government custody, then entered the service. He traveled a lot in Russia. His landscapes of this period ("In the Village", "Oaks", "Swamp", "Seashore") are examples of Russian landscape painting, with a clear pattern and well-chosen key .
In 1878 he returned to St. Petersburg and received the title of academician for the painting "Spring flood of the Oka."
He died on January 7, 1903 in St. Petersburg.
