Biography
George Bing was born in the village of Rutham in the county of Kent , already at the age of 10 he joined the Royal Navy of Great Britain as the king's clerk. Then for some time he left the fleet and served in the army garrison of Tangier . He returned to the fleet with the rank of lieutenant. In 1688, significantly contributed to the transfer of the Royal Navy to the side of King William III of Orange during the Glorious Revolution , this fact subsequently had a beneficial effect on Bing's career.
In 1702, Bing became the captain of the Nassau warship and took part in the capture and burning of the French fleet in Vigo Bay under the command of George Ruka . The following year, George Bing was promoted to Rear Admiral . In 1704, he sailed in the Mediterranean Sea , under the command of Sir Cludesley Chauvel, participated in the capture of Gibraltar . He received chivalry for participating in the Battle of Malaga .

In 1708, George Bing received the rank of admiral , and in the same year, Bing prevented an attempt to land the Jacobites and French troops in Scotland led by the candidate for the English throne, Jacob III .
In 1718, Bing defeated the Spanish squadron in the Battle of Cape Passaro , thereby preventing the Spanish from attempting to capture Sicily . After this victory, he negotiated with various representatives of the Italian states on behalf of the British crown. In 1719, he helped the Germans take Messina and destroyed the remaining Spanish ships, which ultimately persuaded the Spanish king to peace.
Upon his return to England , King George I made George Bing a member of the Privy Council of Great Britain , and also granted him two titles - Baron Bing Southhill in Bedford and Viscount Torrington in Devon .
In 1725, Bing was awarded the Order of the Bath . In 1727 , after the accession to the throne of King George II, Bing was appointed First Lord of the Admiralty .
George Bing had 15 children, many of whom also preferred a military career. His fourth son was the future admiral John Bing , who was shot due to the fact that in the battle of Minorca he “ did not do everything that depended on him ” [1] .
George Bing died on January 17, 1733 in the British capital.
Descendants of Bing still retain the title of Viscount Torrington.
