Story
The protagonist of the film (and the novel of the same name) is Andrey Startsov (actor Igor Starygin ) - a humanist , intellectual , confused in his feelings [2] .
The events of the film, unlike the novel, occur in chronological order. In addition, there are significant plot differences with the original source. In particular, in the film, Andrei’s help to the captured Margrave von tsur Mühlen-Schönau in the latter’s departure to his homeland was not shown as a forgery of documents, but as an ordinary request to his friend Kurt for assistance in this matter. And as a result, the ending of the picture also differs significantly from the novel: Kurt Van returns to Germany and, having become a participant in the November Revolution , dies, being shot by a detachment under the command of von tsur Mühlen-Schönau. The film ends with a theatrical performance in Petrograd reading two letters addressed to the protagonist - one written by Kurt before the shooting, the other left by Rita before her decision to leave Andrei for the sake of his life with Marie Urbach who arrived.
In the fall of 1919, Andrei Startsov arrived from the city of Semidola (the name was invented) in Petrograd . He was mobilized in the army and arrived at the duty station, but instead of sending him to the units operating on the front, Andrei was left a clerk at the headquarters. Soon, Rita arrives to Andrei - a woman who is expecting a child from him.
The year is 1914. Student Andrei Startsov shortly before the start of World War I arrived in Germany . Because of the outbreak of war, he cannot get home and lives in the town of Bischofsberg. In Germany, he became friends with the artist Kurt Wahn (actor Siegfried Glazedier ), a person close to him in spirit. But with the outbreak of war, Kurt drew back from his friend Andrei, he considered that from now on they had nothing to talk about.
