Geography
According to the US Census Bureau, the city’s area is 26.03 km², of which 25.46 km² is land, and 0.57 km² is water.
Population
According to the 2010 census, the population of Athens was 23,832 people (of which 50.0% were men and 50.0% were women), there were 6903 households and 1842 families. Racial composition : white - 86.4%, African - Americans - 4.4%, Native Americans - 0.2%, Asians - 6.1 and representatives of two or more races - 2.3% [2] .
Of the 6903 households, 20.5% were couples living together (7.8% with children under 18 years of age), in 4.2% of households women lived without husbands, in 2.1% of households men lived without wives, 73, 3% did not live in a family. On average, 2.28 people were households, and the average family size was 2.74 people. Alone lived 33.8% of the population, 5.0% were single elderly people (over 65 years old) [2] .
The population of the city by age range was as follows: 5.8% - residents under 18 years of age, 35.9% - from 18 to 21 years old, 54.0% - from 21 to 65 years old and 4.3% - aged 65 years and older. The average age of the population is 21.6 years. For every 100 females there are 100.0 males, while for 100 adult females there are already 100.1 males of comparable age [2] .
In 2014, out of 22,699 able-bodied residents over 16 years old, 10,123 people worked. At the same time, men had a median income of $ 42,465 a year, compared to $ 31,497 of a median income for women. In 2014, the median income for a family was estimated at $ 62,964, for a household - at $ 17,358. The per capita income is $ 12,185. 23.6% of the total number of families and 56.7% of the total population were below the poverty line at the time of the census [2] .
