According to the project of V.V.Suslov and N.I. Pozdeev, the building was erected by the St. Petersburg architect Genrikh Bernardovich Rush at the request of the merchant Alexandrov. The owner sold it to his sister, O.S. Alexandrova-Gaines , who donated the building to the city for placement in the museum. However, the building was unsuitable for the city museum and furnished rooms and shops were placed here. By the end of the Soviet period, the building was in a state close to emergency. Due to weakened soils, its northern corner sagged. Due to the technical complexity of the reconstruction and the difficult economic situation before and after the collapse of the USSR, only the foundation was strengthened, and the restoration of the building was delayed and not yet fully completed.
The main entrance (on Kremlyovskaya St.) is accented to a height of 2 floors by a portico with two sculptural figures of caryatids. The facades are decorated with an eclectic architectural decor with a predominance of baroque-Renaissance elements. The main dome of the facade is decorated with watches. The interiors of the building are decorated with figures of people, images of face masks, stucco decorations. In the middle of the central building is a lamp - a bronze statue of a woman holding the baby’s hand. For some recent time, the color of the building was pink, now the general tone is the original light gray with a color highlight of individual elements.
The passage originally occupied an entire block formed by the streets of Voskresenka, Petropavlovskaya, Pochtamtskaya and Chernozyorsk boulevards. (modern Kremlin, Musa Jalil, Lobachevsky and Dzerzhinsky). But later, the part of the shopping district, facing the corner of Voskresenka and Pochtamtskaya, was lost. The Chernoyarovsky passage was erected here.
