Biography
Born in 1959 in Chicago . Emanuel's grandfather had Jewish roots and emigrated in 1917, from the Russian-Romanian border. [2] Father Benjamin Emanuel is an immigrant from Israel , a children's doctor , a former member of the underground organization Irgun , operating in Palestine . Mother Marta Smulevich - born and raised in Chicago in the family of a trade union leader, works in an organization that defends civil rights .
Ram graduated from Sarah Lawrence College and Northwestern University of Illinois, where he received a master's degree in public speaking and communication. [3]
Has dual (Israeli and American) citizenship. Held voluntary military service in the Israel Defense Forces in 1991 during the Gulf War .
In 1994, he married Amy Rule [4] , his wife went through the giyur procedure before marriage. Has two sons and a daughter. According to Emanuel himself, Judaism professes [5] . Children are brought up within the Jewish religion.
Policy
Rama's political career began with a consumerism campaign in Illinois.
- He won all the local election campaigns in which he participated.
- One of the main political advisers to Bill Clinton in 1993-1998
- One of the organizers of the handshake ceremony Yitzhak Rabin with Yasser Arafat
- One of the “backstage participants” of the Wye River Accords (1998)
- Member of Congress for Illinois since 2002 . In the 2006 elections, received 78% of the vote, in 2008 - 74%.
- President Barack Obama, elected in November 2008, appointed Ram Emanuel as head of his administration. [6]
On October 1, 2010, he left the Obama administration and returned to Chicago with the goal of running for mayor of Chicago. It was noted that his interest in the post of mayor of Chicago, which he had shown earlier, was further strengthened after statements by the then mayor of the city, Richard Daily, about his unwillingness to be re-elected for a new term [7] .
February 22, 2011, was elected mayor of Chicago, gaining about 55% of the vote in the first round. 51-year-old Ram Emanuel became the first mayor of Chicago of Jewish origin [8] .
April 8, 2015, re-elected for a second term, gaining 56% of the vote. [9]
