Before the onset
In March 1915, the British command decided to conduct a private offensive at the Nev-Chapelle, using 2 army corps. Distracting actions by forces of the 2nd English army and the Belgian units were also supposed. The French army supported this offensive only with artillery.
Offensive
On March 7, after artillery preparation, on a 3-km front, British troops attacked the positions of the 7th German Corps. After the ensuing battles, the attackers managed to take control of the village of Nev-Chapelle and the first German line of defense. Then, in order to prepare for the second attack, the British were forced to suspend, which made it possible for the Germans to tighten their reserves. Subsequent attacks by the British successfully repelled the Germans, who often went on the attack. The British offensive was exhausted. General French due to losses and lack of shells was forced to stop the offensive. The English army lost about 13,000 killed and wounded. The offensive at Nev-Chapelle was unsuccessful for the Allies.
