History
The plot of land at the very edge of the Moscow River , on which the chambers stand, originally belonged to Beklemishev . After the execution in 1525 of Ivan Bersen-Beklemishev , who first fell into disgrace, and then implicated in the so-called. In the “ Maxim Grek case” these lands passed into the royal possession. Soon they were granted to a certain Cyril - the founder of the Kirillov clan. The ensemble that has survived to this day has developed in 1656-1657 under his grandson, the duma clerk Averkiya Kirillov .
In 1703-1711, the house was rebuilt somewhat under the guidance of the new owner of the estate, the clerk of the Armory , A.F. Kurbatov, who was then in charge of the construction of the Kremlin arsenal . During this period, an extension, made in the style of the Petrine era , appeared in the middle of the northern facade overlooking the embankment.
In the second half of the 1860s, the architect A.P. Popov carried out some reconstruction and adaptation of the chambers to accommodate the Moscow Archaeological Society , which was located here in 1868-1923.
Since 1941, the building has been occupied by the Russian Institute of Cultural Studies .
Description
The exterior decor of the St. Nicholas Church and the chambers themselves is extremely diverse and complex. Each of the two tiers of the house is crowned with a complex ledge with a curb , lush platbands on the windows, the wall is crushed by numerous vertical rods : lysens, pilasters and half columns . The overall impression of elegance and splendor is enhanced by the use of colored tiles . On the southern facade and on the arch of the southeast chamber fragments of murals have been preserved.
The extension in the middle of the northern facade facing the embankment appeared in 1703-1711, under the homeowner A.F. Kurbatov. Three-tiered, with a powerful decorative completion and huge volumes of a somewhat bizarre shape, flanking the "tower" of the upper tier, it reflects the tastes of the Petrine era . Windows of the middle tier stand out: they are somewhat larger than the others, framed by strict platbands and end with onion gable- shells. Above the entrance is a powerful visor on curly consoles . The corners of the annex are rusticated , which gives it a certain architectural sophistication and contrasts with the whimsical and “optional” architecture of the 17th century.
The nearby Church of St. Nicholas on Bersenevka was previously connected to the chambers by a covered passage.
