Pampa del Tamarugal National Reserve is located on the plateau of the same name, in the Tarapaca region, in the province of Tamarugal , in Chile .

The reserve's territory is 102,264 ha, the average height is 970 m. Created in 1987 and managed by CONAF, it has a territory divided into three sectors: Sapiga - 17,650 ha; La Tirana - 5225 ha and Pintados - 79 289 ha. Rather uniform vegetation grows on them, including 18 113 ha - planting of tamarugo tree, 1950 ha - planting of carob , 420 ha of mixed planting and 2500 ha of native tamarugo forest.
Tamarugo ( Prosopis tamarugo ) is a highly branching woody plant that can grow in saline soils. Its foliage and fruits are food for the sheep and goats of the Chilean north. In Pampa del Tamarugal there were natural forests that were destroyed by the local population in order to obtain fuel used for the extraction and processing of nitrate .
