Story

At a shepherd dog during a thunderstorm a strong wind blew off his hat. A simple-minded dog took out a lamb skin and carried it to a furrier cat to sew him a new hat. The cat took up work and in a few days made a hat. Everything would be fine if a rich and arrogant goat had not looked into the cat’s shop, whose head was blown off by the head, and who couldn’t choose any hat or hat that was offered to him. Then the goat sold a hat, which was sewn to the dog. The cat acted very badly when, for its own benefit, he was forced to give someone else's hat to the goat, as he was too squeamish when the other hats were offered to him, and he wanted it, paid the cat and took the hat to himself. The dog came on the appointed day for a hat, and the cat was waiting for him, saw him and locked himself in the shop with a key. A dog came, looked that the bench door was locked, turned around and went home, and this happened every time the dog came. The following spring came, at last he found the dog in the cat's shop and began to swear with him about the hat. The cat ran away from him to the goat’s house, where the dog and found his hat, but he couldn’t pick it up, and he got a lot from the goat. So there was a feud between a dog and a cat: "And since this furrier cat is great-grandfather to all our cats, the families of cats and dogs don't get along with each other."

Review Review

The poem “Dog and Cat” (the Russian reader knows it in a free translation by S. Marshak under the name “Furrier”) at first glance seems like a joke. But in the story invented by Tumanyan about how the enmity between cats and dogs first began, a certain social meaning is hidden. The heroes of this tale - Dog, Cat, Judge, their relationship - all this serves Tumanyan as a means to characterize the pre-revolutionary life of a small Armenian town and express its attitude to this life. The tale has a distinct satirical implication.
