The Syrian Navy is a branch of the Armed Forces of the Syrian Arab Republic . The tasks of the Navy include the defense of the 104-mile sea border of Syria.

Syrian Navy History
The Navy was created with the support of France in 1950 .
During the Doomsday War , October 6-7, 1973, the Syrian Navy engaged in naval combat with Israeli ships in the Latakia region. As a result of the battle, all 5 Syrian ships participating in it were sunk, the Israelis did not suffer losses.
On August 29, 1989, a Syrian missile boat sank the Maltese tanker Sunshield, attempting to sail into the restricted area. [one]

The main naval bases of the SAR are the naval base Baniyas , naval base Latakia , naval base Tartus , naval base Al-Minat and naval base al-Baida

Coast Defense
Since 1984, coastal defense forces have been subordinated to the Navy. They consist of 12 P-5 and P-15 Termit anti - ship missiles , according to other sources, 12 self-propelled launchers of the Redut complex with the P-35 missile (1 anti -ship missiles in each battery / on a self-propelled launcher), 2 coastal artillery divisions (36 130 mm guns, 12 100 mm guns) and an observation battalion, 2 infantry brigades , 2 divisions of the Bastion complex with Yakhont anti-ship missile (2010).
