Sharpening - a home-made atypical stitching, stitch-cutting or cutting cold weapon made by the type of awl or stylet (more often) or by the type of knife. Worldwide widespread weapons of prison inmates, a prison knife. Also in the thieves' jargon the names are used for knives or sharpeners: spade, sink, feather, puffed, sandalwood, saplings, toad, stupor, gutter and others.
For the manufacture of sharpening, any suitable available metal object is used: a spoon, a screwdriver, a file , a nail, a shoe arch , a welding electrode , etc. Sometimes sharpening is made of plastic, glass and even bread, sometimes by fixing razor blades on the handle. They are used, as a rule, by a criminal element, more often in a camp environment. In thieves' jargon is called "queen." Sharpening is used in internecine clashes (“disassemblies”) and during riots, and also have household and domestic use - like a kitchen knife .

- On September 10, 1898 in Geneva, the anarchist Luigi Lucceni, with a blow of a sharpener made of a trihedral file , killed the Empress of Austria Elizabeth of Bavaria (Sissi) .
