Biography

Telma Ritter was born in Brooklyn on February 14, 1905. The desire to become an actress she appeared in her youth. She participated in school plays, performed with small theater troupes, and immediately after graduation she entered the American Academy of Dramatic Art . After graduating from the academy, Ritter never took up a professional acting career, since in 1927 she married Joseph Moran and devoted herself to raising two children.

In the early 1940s, Ritter resumed her career, becoming a radio presenter. Then for some time she was an actress in a theater troupe, and in 1947 she made her film debut. The first role of the 42-year-old Telma Ritter was in the film “ Miracle on 34th Street ”, and for the second time in the movie she appeared two years later in the film “ Letter to three wives ”. The popularity of the actress came in 1950 after the role of Birdi Kunan in the film " All about Eve ." This role, as well as the next one in the film The Marriage Season (1951), earned her the second Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actress .

After that, for almost two decades, Telma Ritter continued to act in films, work on television and in the theater. In 1954, she, along with Bob Hope , was leading the 27th Academy Award ceremony . For her subsequent roles, Ritter was nominated four more times for an Oscar , becoming, along with Deborah Kerr , a record holder in the number of nominations, but she never received the coveted award. Notable for the Film Academy were her roles in the films With a Song in My Heart (1952), Incident on South Street (1953), Intimate Conversation (1959) and Alcatraz's Birdies (1962). In 1958, she was awarded the " Tony " prize as the best actress in the musical " New Girl in the City ."

In 1968, shortly after participating in the Jerry Lewis Show, Telma Ritter suffered a heart attack , which subsequently led to her death. Ritter passed away on February 5, 1969, nine days before her 64th birthday.
