Biography
During the Second World War he was a frontline photojournalist. Then he shot short films, commercials, acted as a sound engineer. In 1949, Decae made his debut as the director of photography of the feature film “ Silence of the Sea ” directed by Jean-Pierre Melville , with whom he immediately found a common language. So, Melville recalled that “On the first day I realized that it was pleasant to work with him, on the second I began to receive great pleasure. On the third day, everything became clear. We sang so well that since then we did everything together: we shot, edited, dubbed and mixed the sound. ” In addition to this film, he subsequently directed most of Melville’s films: “ Difficult Children ”, “ Bob the Burner of Life ”, “ Leon Moren, Priest ”, “ Elder Fershaw ”, “ Samurai ”, “The Red Circle ”.
Since the late 1940s, he worked with the largest directors of the new wave - according to criticism, without it a new wave would not have been possible.
