The first instrument of Nuna was a guitar , he began playing the clarinet at the age of fifteen. Already in 1913 - 1914 he played in the Freddy Keppard Orchestra, replacing Sydney Beschet , and after leaving he took his place. In 1917, Nun left New Orleans and moved to Chicago , where he performed with the Keppard Creole Orchestra in the spring of 1918. After returning to New Orleans for several months, Nun left this city forever with King Oliver . Arriving in Chicago again, the musicians entered the Bill Johnson Orchestra, where Nun worked until 1920. For the next six years, he collaborated with Doc Cook and his Dreamland Orchestra. The first records of Nun date back to this time.
In the fall of 1926 , the musician’s most successful creative period begins: in Chicago, he manages to create his own Jimmie Noone's Apex Club Orchestra , named after the main concert venue on which he performed. At different times, members of this group were famous jazz musicians, including pianist Earl Hines . In 1928, the APEX Club Orchestra performed a series of records that became very famous. Throughout the 1930s (except for 1931 and 1935 , when he was touring in New York ), Nun lived in Chicago, occasionally playing with small groups in various clubs, and in the early 1940s, carried away by the idea of reviving old New Orleans jazz, Together with trombonists Kid Ori and Jack Tigarden , as well as drummer Zatti Singleton, he began performing in San Francisco and Los Angeles . Shortly before his death, Nun participated in an all-star concert on the Orson Welles show.
Along with Sidney Bechet and Johnny Dodds, Noon is one of the prominent representatives of the classical New Orleans school of jazz performance on clarinet. In the early stages, his work was influenced by contemporary artists, primarily Béschet, then Nun improved his skills under the guidance of Franz Schöpp, an academic clarinetist who lived in Chicago at that time. Through these activities, Nun improved sound quality and technique. The records of Nuna made with the Oliver Orchestra in 1923, in which he vividly performs solo and creates a special intonation of “blue” notes, are considered classical. Later, Nuna's performing style underwent changes that were noticeable on the recordings of the APEX Club (1928): having given the leading role in the ensemble to the saxophone , he performed complex counterpoint lines using the middle and lower clarinet registers.
