Biography
Born in an impresario family. Massiel's first recordings were released in 1966. In 1968, the singer was asked to replace Juan Manuel Serrat , who won the national selection, as the representative of Spain at the Eurovision song contest because Serrat was going to perform his number in Catalan . With the song “La, la, la,” Massiel won the competition, one point ahead of Cliff Richard . At the same time, the song she performed deserved the greatest criticism for her quality level in comparison with all the compositions that have ever won the Eurovision Song Contest.
After the victory, she was greeted at home as a national heroine and awarded by the Spanish government Bant Isabella the Catholic, but the singer refused the award, for which she was not allowed on Spanish television for a year.
Throughout the 1960s and 80s, it was very popular not only in Spain, but also in Latin America. During her long career, she has released more than 50 albums. She performed a number of roles in the drama theater. Thrice married.
Eurovision Scandal
In the 2008 documentary "1968:" I May of That Year ", a Spanish journalist José Maria Inigo put forward a version about the dishonest nature of Massiel’s victory at the Eurovision Song Contest, allegedly organized by the Spanish representatives to raise the profile of the Franco regime , but representatives of the European Broadcasting Union announced that the results of the competition will not be reviewed.
