Gulmarg is located on the slope of the Pir-Panjal mountain range in the western Himalayas , 52 km from the city of Srinagar in the state of Jammu and Kashmir , India . Located , at an altitude of 2690 meters.
History
In the old days, this place was named after Gaurimarg in honor of the wife of the god Shiva . Gulmarg received its name in the 16th century from Sultan Yusuf Shah (Yousuf Shah Chak, Jahangir), who was fascinated by the beauty of the blooming valley and called this place the Valley of Flowers.
Tourism
Gulmarg is attractive to visit in the winter, as a ski resort with great off-piste skiing opportunities, and in the summer, as a mountain resort for recreation, it has facilities for learning and playing golf, as well as for mountain biking.
You can get to Gulmarg from Srinagar, by taxi or bus, the road will take from 2 to 4 hours.
In Gulmarg, there are about 40 hotels with different conditions and budget of accommodation. The hotels are located both in the immediate vicinity of the ski lift and in the village of Gulmarg (about 20 minutes walk from the ski lifts). High season in summer and winter. The ski season in Gulmarg is from mid-December to the end of March.
Cableways - Gondola and four-seater chairlift, produced by the French company Poma . The gondola, with a capacity of up to 600 people per hour, is a 6-seater cabin, has two sections (phases). The first section, opened in spring 1998, from a height of 2,700 m (Gulmarg station) passes to an altitude of 3,100 m (Kongdori station) and is covered with a forest of Himalayan spruce. The second section, opened in 2005, goes from a height of 3100 m to a height of 4114 m (Afarvat station). The total length of the cable car is about 5 kilometers. The four-chair lift, built in 2011, originates from the middle station of the gondola (Kongdoori glade) and stretches along the line of the second turn of the gondola to the ridge of Mary (Mary's Shoulder) to an altitude of 3550 meters.
Also in Gulmarg there are several rope tows on the training slopes.
Training slopes and the track in the first stage are prepared by snowcat. The remaining slope areas are for off-piste skiing.
The ski area of the ski resort Gulmarg begins from the top of the Pir Pyanzhal ridge, from a height of about 4,000 m, and ends almost in the village of Tangmarg ( Tanmarg ), located at an altitude of 2,150 m at its foot. Thus, the vertical drop height of the ski area is slightly less than 2000 meters.
In winter, the ski patrol service provides security on the slopes with the help of foreign avalanche safety experts. In Gulmarg there is a medical center with basic equipment, medicines and X-rays, the doctor on duty takes around the clock.
