Armenak Misakovich Alachachyan ( armenian Արնենակ Ալաչաչյան , English Armenak Alachachian ; December 25, 1930 , Alexandria , Egypt - December 4, 2017 , Scarborough , Toronto , Canada ) - Soviet basketball player , coach, eight- time USSR champion (1959-1966) [2] , four - time European champion (1953, 1961, 1963, 1965), silver medalist of the Olympic Games (1964). Honored Master of Sports of the USSR (1953), Honored Trainer of the RSFSR (1969).

Biography
Armenak Alachachyan was born into a family of Armenian refugees who escaped and found shelter in Egypt during the Armenian Genocide in Turkey . Started playing basketball in Alexandria. In 1947, his family repatriated to Armenia , and he continued to play basketball, first at SKIF in Yerevan , and then at Almaty 's Petrel, where he revealed himself as a talented point guard [3] . In 1953 he made his debut in the USSR national team , in which he played with some interruptions until 1965 and won four European Championships (1953, 1961, 1963, 1965) and the silver medal of the Olympic Games in Tokyo (1964). In 1958 he was invited to CSKA , becoming the captain of the USSR strongest basketball club. As part of CSKA, he became the champion of the USSR six times (1960-1962, 1964-1966) and twice the winner of the European Champions Cup (1961, 1963) [4] .
After the player’s career ended in 1966, Armenak Alachachyan switched to coaching. In 1968 he became the head coach of CSKA [5] . Under his leadership, the club twice won the USSR championship and won the FIBA Champions Cup 1968/1969 [6] . Nevertheless, at the end of 1970, after a relatively unsuccessful start of the team in the season, he was removed from the post of head coach of CSKA [7] .
After that, Armenak Alachachyan decided to leave the USSR and emigrate to Canada . Since 1971 he lived in Toronto , where he was engaged in entrepreneurial activity, having founded a chain of jewelry stores [8] .
