The Devil's Foot is one of 56 stories by the English writer Arthur Conan Doyle about detective Sherlock Holmes . First appeared in the collection " His farewell bow ." The author himself put this story in ninth place on his list of 12 best stories about Sherlock Holmes [2] .

Story
Holmes is resting on the Cornish coast near Mounts Bay when Mortimer Trigennis turns to him for help: his two brothers went crazy and his sister died right at the table with a distorted face, although Mortimer was visiting them the night before and there was no sign of tragedy . Soon, Mortimer Trigennis himself died in the same way. It turns out that the death of two people and the madness of the brothers was caused by the poisonous powder of the plant “Devil's Foot Root” (in reality, such a plant does not exist [3] ). While testing the effect of the powder on themselves, Holmes and Watson nearly died. With the help of a powder stolen from a traveler, Leon Sterndale, for the sake of an inheritance, Trijennis deprived his two brothers of his mind, and killed his sister. Sterndale, who loved the poisoned girl, from the description of the scene of the incident understood what had happened, and avenged Mortimer for her death by pouring the same powder into his lamp. After hearing Sturndale's confession, Holmes decides not to detain him.
Interesting Facts
- The story contains references to the story " The Hound of the Baskervilles ", for example, that the action also occurs on peat bogs. Holmes's client is also called Mortimer.
