Cartoon portrait of Gustave Dore, 1875

Gustave was born in the family of the bridge builder Pierre-Louis-Christopher Dore. From early childhood, he amazed others with the skill of drawing. After some time, in 1841, the artist's family moved to Bur . This move had a huge impact on all of Dore's artistic activities. In 1847, Dore and his mother moved to Paris , where Gustave was identified at the Lyceum of Charlemagne . Then the young artist goes to the editor-in-chief of The Magazine Purrier, Filipon, with a series of drawings of the exploits of Hercules and is credited as an employee, while receiving a salary of 5,000 francs. At the end of the same year, the album of lithographs “The Feats of Hercules ”, published by Ober, was published, which indicated that the author of these lithographs was a fifteen-year-old artist who performed them without a teacher and had no classical education.

It is known that the artist divided his working day into three parts: morning was devoted to graphics, noon - to painting, evening - again to graphics.

Dore never received an art education, but spent time in the Louvre and the National Library, studying paintings and prints.

In 1848, the artist became a member of the salon , where he exhibited his works. After 4 years, he breaks his relationship with the magazine. From this moment, Gustave Dore has been designing cheap publications. In 1853, illustrated Byron ; in the same year, the Bible was published in the translation of Ludwig Filippson with illustrations by Dore [2] .

In 1854, his first independent book-album “History of Holy Russia ” (the full title “Picturesque, dramatic and caricature history of Holy Russia” based on the texts of chroniclers and historians Nestor, Sylvester, Karamzin, Segyur , etc. in 500 drawings with comments " Fr. Histoire pittoresque dramatique et caricaturale de la Sainte Russie, d'après les chroniqueurs et historiens Nestor Nikan Sylvestre Karamsin Ségur etc. ) - anti-Russian military pamphlet. [3] [4]

In 1854, illustrations for “ Gargantua and Pantagruel ” also appeared and the album of lithographs “Paris Menagerie” (grotesque sketches of Parisian life) was released. In 1855, drawings for Balzac's Mischievous Stories were published. In 1858 he worked at the Buff-Parisienne Theater on the decoration of the premiere of the operetta Jacques Offenbach's “ Orpheus in Hell ”. [5] 1860s They brought the world illustrations to the “Hell” and “Paradise” of Dante , to the tales of Charles Perrault , to the adventures of Baron Munchausen and Don Quixote . In 1867, an exhibition of works by a French artist was held in London . Since 1869, collaborates with Blanchard Jerold. Blanchard Gerold was inspired by the publication of Microcosm of London by Thomas Rowlandson, William Payne and Rudolf Ackermann, published in 1808 . Therefore, the idea arises to create a multilateral image of London and fit it in one publication. As a result, Gustave Dore signs a five-year project with Grant & Co. The artist undertakes to stay in London for three months and receives an amount of £ 10,000 per year as a labor payment. The book London: A Pilgrimage with 180 illustrations was published in 1872 . However, the publication was coldly received by critics, which is exactly how the Art Journal and Westminster Review reacted to the schedule. In the 1870s , Dore completed a series of engravings " Versailles and Paris ", and also designed a publication on the history of Spain.

In 1874-1879, he painted 87 illustrations for the three-volume edition of Dante’s Divine Comedy, published by Wolf Publishing House [6] .

Dore is called the greatest illustrator of the XIX century for the unsurpassed play of light and shadow in his graphic works.

He was buried in the Pere Lachaise cemetery .
