The first edition of “IBM PC for the user” was released in the spring of 1990 . Then the book was revised and supplemented, the last seventh edition was prepared in 1997 . The total circulation of its various editions by 2003 amounted to more than 3.5 million copies. A significant number of novice users in Russia and the CIS have used this textbook. The latest edition was reprinted many times until 2006 .
In an interview with Rossiiskaya Gazeta on September 16, 2003, the author explained the reasons for the success of the book: [4]
... Individual users are responsible ... for their computer, and to ensure ... security, they now need to know and do quite a lot. ... All this is very similar to the situation of 30-40 years ago with cars.
As long as people can get the necessary knowledge ... from books, from the Internet ... and if they talk at school, ... it will be very cool. ... I believe that the author of the textbook ... should indicate what are the general principles and what are the features of their implementation ...
- Your books paid a lot of attention to the description of the functions and “keys” of specific programs, but in the end, the reader received a general idea of the organization of a computer and its systems. What is the right balance of general explanations and specific instructions?
- I believe that there should be exactly so many general explanations and motivations that the reader can consciously apply specific instructions ...
- Is there a fear of a computer in adults learning how to use it?
“For many adults, yes.” ... In general, it seems to me that a clear, understandable, logically constructed textbook or training course is the best remedy against such fears.
The seventh edition contains a detailed and accessible for beginners look at the capabilities of a computer, its devices, programs, local and global networks, methods of working in DOS and Windows , ways to use the most popular and useful, according to the author, programs - Norton Commander , Norton Utilities , Lexicon , Aidstest , Dr. Web , ADinf , etc. For more experienced users, chapters on configuring DOS and Windows, protecting against computer viruses , protecting data, etc. are provided.
Two new books were released in 2006 - Windows for Beginners and Windows for Beginners and Experienced.
