Biography

Born probably in the early 1760s . The first literary experiments placed in the journal N. I. Novikov "Morning Light" ( 1777 - 1780 ). From 1785 to 1792, his letters to HM Karamzin survived (see Russian Archive , 1863 ). According to M. A. Dmitriev (“Little Things from the Stock of My Memory,” Moscow , 1869 ), Petrov and Karamzin lived together in the house of the Friendly Scientist Society. Karamzin was obliged to develop the feeling of the graceful to the instructions of Petrov and his discerning taste. Karamzin himself, who portrayed his friend in the elegy “The Flower on the Coffin of My Agathon” and partly in the story “Sensitive and Cool” ( 1803 ), looked at him as his leader and senior in knowledge and prudence. On the recommendation of Karamzin, Petrov entered the service as personal secretary to G. R. Derzhavin, in 1791 he was determined in his Office to accept the petitions of His Imperial Majesty and moved to St. Petersburg , where he died on March 21 ( April 1 ) 1793 [1] .

Creativity

In addition to “Morning Light”, he collaborated, mostly with translations, in the magazine “Children's Reading”, which was published under “Moscow Vedomosti” and the editor of which he was from 1785-1789 , in the magazines “Conversations with God” and “Reflections on matters Of God "( 1787 - 1789 ) N. I. Novikova and in the" Moscow Journal "(1791-1792) HM Karamzin. Separately printed are: the allegorical novel “Chrysomander” (translated from German, 1783 ), depicting, in the opinion of contemporaries, the teachings of mysticism and therefore causing the prohibition and withdrawal from sale, “On Ancient Mysteries or Sacraments” ( 1785 ), “The Teacher or the Universal education system "(transl. with it., 1789 - 1791 ) and the Indian poem" Bagaut-Geta "(transl. with English, 1788 ). Detailed content of the story "Chrysomander", see. Art. Mikhail Longinov , placed in the "Collection of literary articles published in memory of A. F. Smirdin" (vol. 4, 1859 ).

Petrov played a famous role in the development of Russian sentimentalism. In particular, he had a great influence on Karamzin, who used his advice and criticisms. Petrov is repeatedly mentioned in the works of Karamzin [1] .
