Story
“Mondays in the sun” begins with a journalistic report about the clashes between the police and the workers who were fired in connection with the closure of the shipyard in the northern Spanish town, as the shipyard owners considered it more profitable to sell these lands for the construction of luxury real estate. In the center of the film is the story of several unemployed men who never managed to arrange their lives two years after they remained on the street. They meet in the bar Rico [2] (Joaquin Clement), the only one who managed to survive, because he invested monetary compensation in the purchase of the bar, and on Mondays they sit on stones heated by the sun on the seashore.
Santa ( Javier Bardem ), an informal company leader, dreams of a beautiful country in Australia, invents a language that does not exist, and in protest he commits acts of civil disobedience , for example, smashing a street lamp, although he has nothing to pay the fine. Lino ( Jose Angel Ejido ), a middle-aged family man, stubbornly tries to find work, but everywhere only young people are required. Jose ( Luis Tosar ) can hardly bear the fact that his wife (Niev Medina) has to work for two, losing her health, and fears that she will leave him. Reina (Enrique Villein) takes a job as a security guard and secretly brings friends to watch a football match from the roof of a construction site near the stadium. Interestingly, while watching the match, the conversation goes about the famous Russian goalkeeper Lev Yashin , his nickname “Black Spider” is mentioned. Amador (Celso Bugallo) gets drunk after leaving his wife and commits suicide. Their company even has a Russian emigrant Sergei (Serge Ryabukin), who during the time of the USSR was preparing to fly into space at the Cosmonaut Training Center named after Yu.A. Gagarin . But the Soviet Union collapsed, and Sergei was in Spain among the unemployed.
A joke that Sergey tells ( quote ) is remarkable: “Two old friends, a member of the party, meet, and one says to the other:“ You know, everything that was told to us about communism is a lie. ” And the other answers: “This is not the worst. The worst thing is that everything we have been told about capitalism is the truth. ”
Their future is eternal Monday in the sun, filled with monotonous longing, which draws them in like a swamp, and deprives them of the strength to fight. But sometimes they explode this longing with ridiculous antics, giving the film a tragicomic hue, and, in spite of everything, continue to be people capable of loyalty, friendship, compassion.
