Bled ( Slovenian. Bled , German. Veldes ) is a city in the northwestern part of Slovenia , near the borders with Italy and Austria . The population of the city is 5,252 according to the 2002 census , the population of the entire community is 10,899 . Bled is located on the shores of Lake Blaysko , in the Julian Alps east of Triglav National Park . The city of Bled is a popular tourist destination.

Geography and transport
Bled is located 45 kilometers northwest of the capital Ljubljana and 10 kilometers southeast of Jesenice . About 8 kilometers north of the city runs the Austrian border, 40 kilometers to the west - the Italian border. The city stands nearby on the railway and highway Ljubljana - Villach . A few more roads from Bled lead to the mountains, to Triglav National Park .
History
The Slavs settled in the Bled corner in the 7th century [1] . Bled Castle was first mentioned under its German name Feldes in 1004 , when it was granted by Emperor Henry II of Albuin, Bishop of Brixen . In 1278, he, along with the whole of Krajna, passed to Rudolph I after the Battle of Sukhoi Krut and since then was a part of the Habsburg power until the First World War , with the exception of the period 1809-1816, when it belonged to the Napoleonic Illyrian provinces .
After the partition of Austria-Hungary, Bled began to belong to Yugoslavia and turned into the summer residence of the monarchs of the house of the Karageorgievichs , and then Josip Broz Tito . Since 1991 - as part of independent Slovenia.
Attractions
- Blesko is a picturesque mountain lake with clear water. In the middle of the lake is the island on which the Assumption Chapel is located.
- Bled Castle is a castle built on top of a 130-meter sheer cliff above the lake. First mentioned in 1004, has since been rebuilt and expanded many times.
- Parish Church of St. Martina .
- Hotel Vila is the former summer residence of I. Broz Tito .
Tourism
Bled is one of the largest balneological and ski resorts in the country. The popularity of Bled as a resort dates back to the 19th century. Guests of the city are also offered opportunities for outdoor activities (golf, horse and bike rides, mountain hiking). In winter, there are many ski slopes.
Every two years in the spring, an international chess tournament in the Swiss system takes place in Bled.
