The molar mass is 158.26 g / mol. The molar conductivity at infinite dilution at 25 ° C is 291 cm · cm² / mol.

Getting

It can be obtained by the interaction of potassium carbonate with sulfur dioxide :

K2CO3+SO2→K2SO3+CO2{\ displaystyle {\ mathsf {K_ {2} CO_ {3} + SO_ {2} \ rightarrow K_ {2} SO_ {3} + CO_ {2}}}}

Chemical Properties

  • Like all sulfites, it exhibits reducing properties. For example, in an acidic environment it is easily oxidized by potassium permanganate :
2KMnOfour+fiveK2SO3+3H2SOfour→6K2SOfour+2MnSOfour+3H2O{\ displaystyle {\ mathsf {2KMnO_ {4} + 5K_ {2} SO_ {3} + 3H_ {2} SO_ {4} \ rightarrow 6K_ {2} SO_ {4} + 2MnSO_ {4} + 3H_ {2} O }}}
  • In humid air or in contact with water, a crystalline hydrate is formed containing 2 water molecules - K 2 SO 3 · 2H 2 O (CAS number 7790-56-9).

Application

  • Used as a preservative as a food supplement E225.
