The famous choreographer George Balanchine recalled the books of his pre-revolutionary childhood:
And of course, the unforgettable "Max and Moritz" by William Bush! I remember they climbed into the bakery, in general there were terrible robbers. I really liked Bush, whom, incidentally, Stravinsky also loved. Stravinsky, although far from young, could have recited Bush by heart in large pieces.

In addition to illustrations for his writings, Bush is the author of more than a thousand paintings (mostly of a small format) painted in oil . During the life of the author, they remained little known, and were exhibited only after his death. Most of them are executed in an expressionistic manner.
Other famous works:
- "The Life of St. Anthony of Padua ”, 1870;
- The Pious Elena, 1872;
- Pater Filutius, 1873.
