Audi 80

The Audi 80 is a mid-size car manufactured by Audi's German automaker from 1966 to 1996. Initially, the model had a platform in common with Volkswagen Passat and was available in sedan and station wagon bodies (Avant version). The coupe and convertible, although not part of the Audi 80 family, had a common platform and many details.

This model debuted in Europe in 1973 as the Audi 80 and, in the same year, in the USA as the Audi Fox. The official presentation of the car took place at the Geneva Motor Show in March 1973. In the same year, the car was named " European Car of the Year ." The car was available in a 2- or 4-door sedan-style bodywork. The car took its place on the market in exchange for several models that Audi had discontinued (F103 series, which included the first model, designated as the β€œAudi 80”). In addition, Audi, in the person of this model, received a real competitor for the Opel Ascona and Ford Taunus [3] .

The Audi 80 was first equipped with 4-cylinder engines of 1.3 and 1.5 liters. with one camshaft ( SOHC ), power from 55 hp up to 85 hp In the domestic market, 2- and 4-door sedans were available in basic condition (55 or 75 hp, simply referred to as Audi 80 and Audi 80 S, respectively) as L-models (LS with 75 hp engine) or like the GL, in a more expensive configuration (only 85 hp). In 1978, the Audi 80 was transferred to the B2 platform (Type 81) in Europe, and in 1979 in North America. Audi continued to use the 80 as a brand in Europe, but in North America it began to designate the car as the Audi 4000 / 4000S. The body design of the Audi 80 B2 was originally developed by Klaus Lute, but after his departure from Audi to BMW, the design was completely redone by Georgetto Giugiaro . Although a 4-door model was usually ordered, the 2-door Audi 80 was also produced. A station wagon model was not available since the Volkswagen Passat occupied this niche. In the USA, the basic equipment of the car corresponded to the European Audi 80 CD, which also differs from the European one in that it meets more stringent standards for the content of substances in the exhaust gases.

In Europe, the Audi 80 was standard, however, later, in 1984, the Audi 90 was released, which is an Audi 80 with a large engine, with a lot of additional options and a choice of two 5-cylinder I5 engines with power 115 h.p. and 136 hp, 2.2-liter, which was later increased to 2.3 liters, or a 75-horsepower l4 turbodiesel engine, the latter was also available for the Audi 80. Audi 90 was available as with front-wheel drive ( Typ 81 ), and with all-wheel drive ( Typ 85 ). In the Audi 90 with an engine of 2.2 liters. ABS was available, at an additional cost of DM 3725. In addition, power windows, a sunroof, headlamp wipers, air conditioning and cruise control were available in the Audi 90.

The B2 platform turned out to be quite universal and profitable; many components were shared or borrowed from Audi CoupΓ©, Audi Quattro and Audi Sport Quattro, which, over time, helped to consolidate the company in the eyes of the people after its quattro system - permanent all-wheel drive, useful in various types of races [5] .

B2 sedans were offered in Europe until the end of 1986, and until 1987 in the rest of the world; Audi CoupΓ© remained on this platform until 1988, before being replaced. The Audi CoupΓ© has many common components and body shape and the original Audi Quattro .

Since the 1984 model year, Audi has made subtle changes to B2, the taillights now resembled those of the Audi 100 Type 44 (Audi 100 C3), the rear and front bumpers, the boot lid, the dashboard, the steering column switches, the steering wheel and the front have also changed headlights. The changes affected the wiring, the fuse box was moved under the hood.

In 1983, the Audi 80 Sport, based on the Audi 80 GTE, was introduced in the UK. A special anniversary version of the Audi 4000CS quattro was made in the 1985, 1986 and 1987 model years.

Audi 5 + 5 was released on the Australian market in October 1981 [6] . The model was described as the "uniquely Australian Special." And, in fact, it was an Audi 80 B2, 4-door sedan, with a 5-cylinder engine displacement of 2144 cmΒ³. [7]

In September 1986, Audi introduced the new generation Audi 80, which since 1987 appeared on the European market. In other markets, the model was introduced a year later. The model was based on the new B3 platform (which broke the connection with Volkswagen B-series platforms, not being the same as the Passat B3 platform). The new model had a new aerodynamic shape and galvanized body. It was the first mid-size car, which had a fully galvanized body, which allowed longer to resist corrosion. This protection turned out to be so effective that Audi extended the warranty period against corrosion, which at the pre-production stage was assumed to be 8 years, but, in the end, was extended to 12 years; Audi still continues to use galvanized bodies for current models.

Unlike the previous platform, the B3 was sold worldwide under the brands Audi 80 or Audi 90, in addition, various delivery options were eliminated. Audi, for the most part, transferred the existing powertrain concepts to the new model, although an injector was now available on some engine models. A number of new gasoline and diesel 4-cylinder engines became available to European consumers. The 5-cylinder Audi 90 was again presented as a model designed for the high-end market - a more expensive version of the standard model, just as it was with B2 (Type 81). Now, for all versions, the Procon-ten security system was available, which was offered as an alternative to the airbag. For the Audi 80/90, this system was first available, and was offered optionally at a price of 1000 DM . The Audi 90 was visually distinguished by the larger width of the rear light panel surrounding the license plate, as well as the headlights, to which the main-beam headlights were additionally added. The front grille was also slightly different. Turn signal lamps were built into the bumper, and were next to the fog lamp, unlike the Audi 80, and the bumpers themselves were painted in body color. The Audi 90 also had Audi's first 20-valve engine, after the turbocharged engine used in the Audi Sport Quattro . This engine had a power of 170 hp. The Audi 80/90 quattro had a Torsen center interaxle limited slip differential, and the rear differential locked at speeds below 25 km / h, which was monitored by electronics.

The same versions were available in the UK and Europe: the Volkswagen Audi Group (VAG) (later renamed the Volkswagen Group ) wanted to ensure the consistency of all markets, so the level of interior decoration was the same. However, in North America the range of choice was more limited: from 1988 to 1992, a choice between 2.3-liter injection was available. and quattro 2.3 liters.

Since the 1988 model year, the new 2-door Audi CoupΓ©, ( Typ 89 ) introduced in Europe, has been based on the B3 sedan and a shortened wheelbase and a modified rear end. The model came with 2.0 liter engines. 115 hp and two engines of 2.3 liters. different power. This model later served as the basis for the Audi B4 CoupΓ© and Cabriolet. The prefix β€œ80” was omitted in the names of these models, and they were known simply as the Audi CoupΓ© and Audi Cabriolet . Due to the strong modernization of the design in the convertible version, this model continued to exist until 2000, long after the B3 models were replaced by versions on the B4 platform.

In 1989 (1990 model year) the car received a new Typ 8A body, outwardly this body was not much different from the previous Typ 89 modification, for example, the new body had narrower rubber moldings along the side. The most noticeable changes have occurred in the suspension: the stabilizer struts, in the front suspension, now have hinges and link the anti-roll bar to the suspension strut.

In 1989, for the 1990 model year, North America received the Audi CoupΓ© quattro and Audi 90 quattro models, which had a 5-cylinder ( I5 ) 20-valve engine with a capacity of 2.3 liters. 164 hp (122 kW). It is believed that these cars are made in the style of " Gran Turismo " - a luxury car with sports inclinations, as the opposite of a special lightweight sports car. Weighing between 1380 kg (1990 sedan) and 1500 kg (1991 coupe), these cars were not lightweight, especially considering the 164-horsepower power unit. These cars can be distinguished by their characteristic wheels (Audi CoupΓ© quattro has 15-inch Speedline wheels, Audi 90 quattro has 14-inch BBS Mesh or 15-inch Speedline). These cars differ from the usual Audi 80/90 in several ways. Notable differences include a standard leather interior with wood trim, additional sensors mounted at the bottom of the center console, a carbon fiber center drive shaft and a rear differential lock button. The Audi CoupΓ© quattro looks similar to the European Audi S2, but does not have a turbo engine like the S2.

The latest Audi 80/90 B3 was sold in North America as a 1992 model; in Europe, all B3 were discontinued at the end of the 1991 model year to give way to the B4 series; however, it is known that several Audi 90 Sport quattro with a 2.3 liter engine. 20V left the assembly line in early 1992. After 1991, the name "Audi 90" was eliminated and all cars sold in Europe went under the brand name "Audi 80".

The car has gained immense popularity in the CIS countries and is widely represented in the secondary market [10] .
