On the Tour de France, at the highest point of each significant climb, points are awarded to the first ones to get there. The lifts are divided into categories from the highest (Hors categorie - outside the category, the most difficult) to the fourth (least difficult) based on their length and steepness. The higher the category, the more points the rider gets. A similar division into categories is in other races.
