The Battle of Goma ( French Bataille de Goma ) - the battle for the capital of the Congolese province of North Kivu between the Tutsi rebels ( Laurent Nkunda ) on the one hand and the Congolese government forces, supported by UN troops in October 2008 .

Background
The conflict in Kivu flared up in 2004 and was an echo of the Rwandan Genocide . Laurent Nkunda said that government troops are not able to ensure the safety of his Tutsi fellow tribesmen. In 2007, Nkunda was already trying to capture Goma , but to no avail. In January 2008, a truce was concluded.
Battle Progress
- October 26 - Rebels take over government base near Rumangabo and army headquarters in Virunga National Park [1]
- October 28 - fighting broke out near the city of Rutshuru on the border with Uganda [2]
- October 29 - government troops left Goma [3] , but Nkunda announced a ceasefire and stopped the advance of his troops.
- October 31 - rebels continue to remain 15 km from Goma [4]
- November 4 - Nkunda announced his intention to seize the capital of Kinshasa in case the DR Congo government does not sit at the negotiating table [5]
- November 5 - the Hutu pro-government militia violated the ceasefire and unsuccessfully attacked the positions of the Nkunda rebels in the areas of the cities of Rutshuru and Kiwanja [6]
- November 6 - the rebels established control over the cities of Kiwanja (northwest of Rutshuru ) and Nyanzale [7] , displacing Mai-Mai detachments and headquarters of the 15th brigade of government troops from there.
- November 17, 2008 - in spite of the truce declared, the most fierce fighting in recent times has flared up in Rivindi , 125 km north of Goma. [8]
- November 19 - the rebels agreed to withdraw their troops 40 km from Goma [9] , which can be interpreted as ending the battle for Goma.
