Biography
In his youth, Adan showed no interest in music and was preparing for the career of a scientist.
He studied at the Parisian Imperial Conservatory of music and recitation in organ class with Francois Boaldieu [4] . The successes of the young composer were so significant that in 1825 he received the Roman Prize .
He helped his teacher in his work on the opera The White Lady, writing an overture to her, and writing music for vaudeville . In 1829 he composed the first one-act opera Peter and Catherine ( French: Pierre et Catherine ) on a Russian story. He worked closely with choreographer Filippo Taglioni .
In 1833 , the premiere of his ballet Faust took place.
In the late 1830s. worked in St. Petersburg - first on the production of his ballet The Virgin of the Danube (1838), and then on the ballet The Sea Robber, written especially for the Russian premiere (1840).
Upon his return to Paris, he created the ballet " Giselle " ( 1841 ) on the libretto by Theofil Gautier , which approved the romantic trend in French ballet art.
Among many other Adan ballets, one of his last works, Corsair ( 1856 ), is of the greatest importance.
Adan is the author of about 50 operas, of which the Postman from Longjumeau ( French: Le postillon de Lonjumeau ; 1836) was most popular [5] ; “The King of Iveto” ( French Le Roi d'Yvetôt,; 1842); "Cagliostro" ( fr. Cagliostro,; 1844); “The Giralda, or New Psyche” ( Fr. Giralda ou La nouvelle Psychée ; 1850), “ If I were a King ” (1852) [6] .
In 1846, Adan, having quarreled with the director of the Paris Opera, decided to open his own lyrical theater ( Fr. Théâtre-Lyrique ), for which he rented the building of the . The composer, and now the theater director, intended to devote his “National Opera” ( French Opéra-National ) to the latest French repertoire , however, as a result of the Revolution of 1848, the theater was closed and Adan was in debt for many years.
On October 1, 1848, Adolf Adan became a professor of composition and counterpoint in his alma mater, the Imperial Conservatory of Music and Recitation [7] .
In 1847, Adan wrote in the words of Christmas song Minuit, chrétiens ("O, Holy Night"). It was first performed in , during the midnight mass on Christmas night, performed by opera singer Emily Laurey ( French Emily Laurey ). The “Christmas Carol” was readily accepted at the Catholic Church , and she quickly entered into the Christmas services. However, when church authorities learned that a Jew had written music, a song that had already become a favorite Christmas carol was unanimously rejected by the Catholic Church of France . Nevertheless, they continued to perform it, and a few years later she appeared in America , where she became extremely popular.
In 1853, the composer breathed a second life into a 15th-century French song “ ”, using it in his opera “The Deaf” ( Le Sourd ou L'Auberge pleine ).
Adan had a literary talent. His feuilleton and articles appeared in print. In 1859, fragments from the composer's memoirs were published on the pages of the Theater and Music Bulletin in St. Petersburg.
