Biography
The pupil of Kuban basketball . Salnikov began training at the Sports School of the city of Tuapse with Viktor Petrovich Fionov, Honored Coach of Russia, his first coach, who opened the way for him to world basketball.
After graduating from school, he entered the Krasnodar Medical Institute, where he was noticed by the young ambitious coach Alexander Bannikov, a student of Igor Zelenov - the master of Kuban basketball. Bannikov invited the 17-year-old student Salnikov to the team of the major league "Builder" (Krasnodar), and a little later - to the team of the Krasnodar Territory. In 1971, the Kuban team first won the final of the Spartakiad of the Peoples of the RSFSR . One of the leading players, the sniper of that team was 22-year-old Salnikov.
V. A. Shablinsky, the coach of the main team of Ukraine and the Kiev “Builder” could not get past such a player, and since 1972 Salnikov has already played in Kiev. The next year he graduated from the Kiev Medical Institute and as part of the Kiev "Builder" for the first time became the bronze medalist of the USSR championship.
In the same 1973, Salnikov made his debut in the USSR national team and together with it won the "First World Basketball Festival" - a tournament of the nine strongest teams in the world (with the participation, including teams of Yugoslavia, the USA, Cuba), held in the capital of Colombia Bogotá under the auspices of FIBA .
In 1985 he entered the Kiev Institute of Physical Culture. He graduated in 1989 and received a specialty: basketball coach.
In 1989, he retired from the ranks of the Soviet Army with the rank of major of the medical service.
In 1989, he was invited by the coach to the team of the men's major league in Warsaw “Legia” (Poland). But after Salnikov conducted several trainings, the club president, assessing his physical fitness and skill, decided that he should be not only a coach, but also a player on the court. So for two years he was a playing coach at BC Legia (Warsaw). From 1991 to 1993 he worked as the head coach of BC "Legia" (Warsaw). He finished his professional career in 1991, when he turned 42 years old.
In 1993 he returned to Kiev . From 1993 to 1994 he worked at the Ministry of Youth and Sports of Ukraine as a state coach of the men's national basketball team of Ukraine.
In 1994 he was invited to Lebanon . He worked as a coach for the male first league in the city of Sidea . In 1995, he became a trainer in the Lebanese championship team Riadi (Beirut) , where he worked for three years. In this post, he replaced Ivan Edeshko. In 1997, under the leadership of head coach Alexander Salnikov, the team of BC “Riadi” became the champion of Lebanon among the teams of the major league.
For 10 years, Alexander Salnikov worked as a sports director in BC Kyiv, created in 1999 thanks to the initiative and efforts of the illustrious Olympic champion in 1988, the first Ukrainian in the NBA, the president of the FBU, Alexander Volkov. With the participation of Salnikov, since 2000, for a decade, BC Kyiv has remained one of the flagships of Ukrainian basketball. During this time, the team six times became the silver medalist of the championship of Ukraine, once - the owner of the Cup (2007), twice was the champion of the country. In 2005, BC Kyiv became the silver medalist, and in 2006 - the bronze medalist of the FIBA EuroCup.
In May 2009, the Super League Association of Basketball Clubs was created in Ukraine, working as a sports consultant, Salnikov was responsible for analyzing the reports of the championship match commissioners and monitoring compliance with disciplinary rules and regulations.
