The construction of the first facilities of Ekibastuz GRES-1 originates in January 1974.

The power plant is located on the northern shore of Lake Zhengeldy, 16 km north of the city of Ekibastuz, Pavlodar region. The station was built as part of the USSR project to create the Ekibastuz fuel and energy complex ( ETEC ). The station’s location was determined by its proximity to the main coal-mining opencasts of Kazakhstan (25 km to the east the world's largest opencast mine “ Bogatyr ”). The station’s water supply is a reservoir created in the pit of Lake Zhengeldy and filled with water from the Irtysh-Karaganda Satpayev Canal.

The Komsomol Central Committee declared GRES-1 an all-Union shock Komsomol construction site.

The dimensions of the main building: length - 500 m, width - 132 m, height - 64 m. And the height of the chimneys is 300 (built in 1980 ) and 330 meters (built in 1982 ).

The generators of units 1 and 2 are connected to the 220 kV outdoor switchgear , blocks 3 and 4 to the -500 kV outdoor switchgear , blocks 5-6 and 7-8 are connected to the -500 kV outdoor switchgear according to the “paired blocks” circuit.

After the collapse of the USSR

From the beginning of the 1990s to 1996, due to the lack of proper maintenance and scheduled repairs, the station's capacity dropped to 655 MW. The equipment had to be constantly stopped accidentally due to breakdowns.

Arrears of salaries to employees reached 7 months.

In 1996, EGRES-1 was purchased by the American energy company AES. During the first year after the purchase of the station, the number of employees was reduced from about 2,500 to 1,000 people, and later to less than 700 people. At the same time, wages began to be paid on time (2 times a month), the social security of workers at the station improved.

At the same time, funds began to be allocated for repairs and increased reliability of power units. Actively introduced "Western" management methods.

As of 2018, 7 power units are in operation (power unit No. 1 is in the process of restoration and reconstruction with equipment replacement).

In 2012, the power unit No. 8 was launched at the station, which has been idle for more than 20 years. In 2014, restoration of block No. 2 was completed (a turbogenerator for it with a capacity of 550 MW was tested in March 2013 [2] , and three low-pressure heaters were shipped by Atomenergomash plant in September 2014 [3] .), And in 2016 it is planned to restore block No. one.

About 20 percent of the electricity generated at the station is supplied to Russia, the rest is distributed on the energy market of Kazakhstan.

In 2010, Ekibastuz GRES-1 LLP was named after the veteran of the energy sector of Kazakhstan and the CIS, Bulat Gazisovich Nurzhanov.

The new legal name of the power plant is Ekibastuz State District Power Station-1 named after Bulat Nurzhanov. "

A greenhouse was recently built near it, in which Dutch roses are grown [4] [5] .

Owners

Until 1996, it was owned by the state, then in 1996 it was sold to the American company AES . Then the tender was held behind closed doors and, according to unconfirmed information, the station cost AES only $ 1.5 million [6] . In 2008, AES sold EGRES-1 to Kazakhmys for $ 1.26 billion. The amount of sale was much more expensive than what AES acquired from the state. In 2010, Kazakhmys sold a 50 percent stake to the Samruk-Kazyna National Welfare Fund for $ 681 million. Subsequently, NWF Samruk-Kazyna transferred a share in EGRES-1 to its subsidiary Samruk-Energy JSC. In 2014, Kazakhmys sold its remaining 50% stake to Samruk-Energy JSC for $ 1.25 billion. Thus, since 2014, a 100% stake in Ekibastuz State District Power Station-1 LLP has been owned by Samruk-Energy JSC [7] [8] .

Power Units

According to the project, each of the eight power units was to produce 500 MW each.

The 1st power unit was commissioned in March 1980. As of 2018, it has been decommissioned and reconstruction and modernization work is underway.
The 2nd power unit was commissioned in October 1980.
The 3rd power unit was commissioned in February 1981.
The 4th power unit was commissioned in November 1981.
The 5th power unit was commissioned in October 1982.
The 6th power unit was commissioned in May 1983.
The 7th power unit was commissioned in October 1983.
The 8th power unit was commissioned in 1984.

Transport

From the Ekibastuz-2 station via Ekibastuz-Severny (GRES-1) to the EGRES-2 platform, there used to be a very intense suburban rail service.

Diesel trains and electric trains delivered personnel to the station and back, as well as summer residents, whose summer residences are located along the train route.

Passenger traffic was completely discontinued in 2005.

Currently, the station staff is delivered to work by bus.

Interesting fact

Mistakes were made during the construction of the first chimney of EGRES-1. The curvature of the pipe is visible even with the naked eye. The people called the pipe "Advance-Pay."

She did not dare to finish building up to the project 330 meters, but stopped the construction at 300 meters.

The difference in altitude between the 1st (300 m) and 2nd (330 m) chimneys is enough to observe a meteorological phenomenon several times a year, when smoke from two chimneys is directed in different directions, at an angle of about 30-40 degrees to friend.

Accidents

There were several serious accidents at the power plant, including 4 accidents with the collapse of the roof of the engine room:

1984 - during repair work at block No. 5, engine oil ignited, the oil supply to the generator shaft seal turned off, hydrogen was released (about 95 cubic meters) and an explosion. Collapse of the roof, fire.

1990 - breakage of the blades on the low-pressure cylinder of the turbine of unit No. 5, failure of the generator shaft seal, hydrogen emission, collapse of the roof of the machine hall. 2 people were killed: a firefighter (stumbled upon an armature) and a blocker.

1998, January - without external influence, the roof of the mash collapsed. Hall at block No. 3. Due to the fact that the accident occurred at about 5 in the morning, there were no casualties.

2003, November - due to a sharp increase in pressure of the LDPE at block No. 3 (according to unspecified data due to an avalanche-like breakage of pipes with feed water (about 300 kgf / cm 2 )) the “cap” of the LDPE was thrown up, the roof of the mash was destroyed by the cap Hall, there was a fire. Died Sosnov Dmitry - beg. Changes in the boiler and turbine workshop located in the immediate vicinity (TPN site). Several people were injured.
