History and composition
The group was formed in 1985 by guitarist Pedro Ayres Magalhães and keyboardist Rodrigo Leão. Later, accordionist Gabriel Gomes and cellist Francisco Ribeiro joined in. In one of the nightclubs in Lisbon, the group heard the performance of singer Teresa Salgueiro and invited her to join the group. In 1987 Madredeus recorded their first album, Os dias da Madredeus .
The name of the group and its further fate
The first album was recorded in an abandoned Lisbon Abbey . The recording was interrupted by the constant sounds of a tram passing by, the line of which was located in the immediate vicinity. Due to this fact, the group chose a name in honor of the neighboring tram stop, “Madre de Deus”, reducing it to the popular “Madredeus”. In 1993, Pedro Aires Magallaines temporarily left the band and was replaced by guitarist José Peixoto. Magalhines reunited with the group later, so two guitarists became in the group.
Wenders and Madredeus
Madredeus released several albums and gained great popularity in Portugal, while remaining unknown outside the country. World fame came in 1994 , when Wim Wenders , impressed by their music, involved Madredeus in the filming of Lisbon Story .
After the Lisbon Story
In 1994, Rodrigue Lean left the group, taking up a solo career, in his place came keyboardist Carlos Maria Trindade. In 1997, Francisco Ribeiro and Gabriel Gomes left the band due to the fact that Madredeus with the recording of the album O Paraíso began to move away from its original folklore sound. The group was invited to guitarist Fernando Judice (Fernando Júdice). Madredeus has sold over 3 million CDs worldwide.
In November 2007, Teresa Salgeiro announced her retirement from Madredeus and has been pursuing a solo career ever since. In 2012, the band released Essência , featuring new vocalist Beatrish Nunes.
