The early years
Lennox Lewis was born on September 2, 1965 in London with immigrants from Jamaica [3] . At birth, his weight was 4.8 kg. Lewis got the name Lennox from a doctor who said that the baby “looks like Lennox” [4] . In 1977, when the boy was 12 years old, the Lewis family moved to Kitchener (Canada). Lennox entered Cameron Heights High School , where he played Canadian football , European football and basketball [5] . In the training years 1982-83, Lennox helped the school's basketball team (AAA rating) win the Ontario Regional Championship [6] [7] . Ultimately, Lennox decided that boxing was his favorite sport. He became a leading amateur boxer and won the Junior World Boxing Championship in 1983 [8] .

In 1988, in Seoul at the Olympics, Lennox played for Canada . In the tournament finals, he met with American boxer Riddick Bow . The first two minutes of the first round, the rivals looked closely at each other, Bowe was more productive due to the right hook and uppercut , but at the end of the round the referee took a point off him for a dangerous head movement. In the second round, Lewis made a successful attack and the referee counted the first knockdown. Lewis made several more successful attacks, then struck the right cross in the jaw immediately after the clinch. The referee counted the second knockdown and decided to stop the fight. Thus, Lennox became the Olympic champion. Lewis’s victory is somewhat devalued by the fact that the Olympics were boycotted by Cuba, traditionally strong in boxing. In the amateur ring, Lewis met three times with Soviet athletes and lost three times (to Vyacheslav Yakovlev in November 1985, Valery Abadzhyan in September 1986, and Alexander Miroshnichenko in April 1988).
Professional career
June 27, 1989 made his debut in the professional ring. Lennox Lewis rival became British boxer Al Malcolm, whom he knocked out in the second round.
In June 1990, Lewis defeated Ossi Ocacio, a former title contender.
On October 31, 1990, Lewis knocked out Frenchman Jean-Maurice Chanet in the 6th round, and won the European EBU Championship title .
In March 1991, the battle of two unbroken avenues of Lennox Lewis (14-0) and Gary Mason (35-0) took place. In the 7th round, Lewis knocked out the opponent and won the title of British Commonwealth.
In July 1991, Leo knocked out former world champion Michael Weaver in the 6th round.
In November 1991, Lewis met with Olympic champion Tyrell Biggs . Biggs grew old and lost its former speed, but nonetheless looked good. Round 1 passed in reconnaissance from a long distance, Round 2 passed in the exchange of blows. In round 3, Biggs managed to outplay Lewis a bit, but a minute before the end of the round Lewis struck the right side, Tyrell Biggs fell, but immediately got up. Trying to recoup, Biggs struck a long side, having failed a lot. Lewis had a counter hook and knocked down Biggs again. Biggs stood up with difficulty. In 1992, the tournament of the 4 strongest heavyweights of the world for the title of absolute champion was held. Two pairs of Lennox Lewis - Donovan Ruddock and Evander Holyfield - Riddick Bowe were formed . The winners of the pairs were to identify the strongest in the final.
Fight with Donovan Ruddock
On October 31, 1992, a fight took place between Lennox Lewis and Donovan Ruddock 12 years after their meeting at the amateurs, where Ruddock defeated Lewis. This time Lewis was stronger. He knocked down Raddock three times: 1 time in the 1st round and 2 times in the 2nd round. After the 3rd fall, the referee stopped the fight and recorded a Lewis victory by TKO.
In November of that year, Riddick Bowe defeated the reigning absolute champion Evander Holyfield in a bitter battle. Bow was obliged to conduct the next fight against Lewis, but, mindful of his defeat in the finals of the Seoul Olympics, he refused, deciding to have a rematch with Holyfield. Since Lewis was British, 2 out of 3 boxing organizations decided not to impede the revenge. The WBC decided not to put up with lawlessness and took Bowe's belt. Upon learning of this decision, Bowe convened a press conference and defiantly threw the WBC belt into the bin. WBC owed no debt: Bowe was permanently deleted from the ratings of this organization.
Champion Tony Tucker
In May 1993, Lewis met mandatory challenger Tony Tucker . The favorite in this battle was Lewis (6 to 1 were taken for his victory). Tucker acted second number, lost the duel of the jabs, but won on power hits. Lewis constantly asked coach Correa who had won the round during breaks. Lewis knocked down Tucker in rounds 3 and 9, but Tucker himself nearly knocked Lewis down in rounds 4, 7, and 11. Lewis missed more hits than Tyson in the fight with Tucker, although Tucker missed more hits from Lewis than in the fight with Mike. The fight was close, but Tucker's knockdowns (for the first time in his career) largely decided the outcome of the fight and after the final bell the judges unanimously announced the winner as Lewis, although his victory did not look impressive.
Fight with Frank Bruno
In October 1993, Lennox Lewis met with Frank Bruno . This was the first time two British boxers have fought for the world heavyweight title. The audience fiercely supported Bruno. During the first 5 rounds, Bruno's advantage was undeniable. At the end of 2 minutes 2 rounds, Bruno held a deuce in the head of the jaw. Lewis staggered, but stood on his feet. Bruno rushed to finish him off, but Lewis managed to enter the clinch. At the end of the round, the situation repeated, Bruno shocked Lewis again, but Lewis began to knit him and beat him on the back of the head with one hand, for which he received a warning. Already at the beginning of round 3, Bruno again shocked Lewis, putting him on the brink of knockdown, but Lewis miraculously stayed on his feet. The entire round of Bruno shook Lewis with powerful and accurate hits. First defeat. Fight with Oliver McCall
In September 1994, Lennox Lewis and Oliver McCall fought. Lewis in the 2nd round missed a shot and fell on canvas. Qualifying fight with Lionel Butler

Butler had a huge number of defeats for the applicant, however, he was able to give a good winning streak and won the right to the eliminator. Lewis knocked out the opponent in the 5th round.
Having won the eliminator, Lewis could not get a meeting with the champion, since McCall had by that time lost to Frank Bruno, beaten by Lewis. Bruno then lost to Mike Tyson . Tyson was then stripped of the title, and the belt was declared vacant in 1996.
Fight with Tommy Morrison
In October 1995, Lewis met with Tommy Morrison . Lewis from the first seconds of the fight dominated the ring, leaving no chance to Morrison. In the second round, he knocked down Morrison after the uppercut, he immediately got up. In the fourth round, Morrison was knocked down again. By the sixth round, Morrison already saw almost nothing due to strong bruises under his eyes. Lewis accelerated the pace, and sent already in the third knockdown of the battered Morrison, he stood up. Lewis went on to finish, and a minute later he sent Morrison to the fourth knockdown, he was barely able to stand on his feet and already did not see anything. Battle with Ray Mercer
In May 1996, Lewis entered the ring against Ray Mercer . Opponents in every possible way exchanged strong uppercuts. In a 10-round duel, Lewis won a difficult victory by a majority of the judges, mainly due to long distance jabs. The decision was loudly booed by a crowd who believed that Mercer had done enough to win the battle. An unofficial result from the Associated Press showed Mercer's victory with a score of 97-93, while unofficial judge of the HBO channel Harold Lederman tied 95-95. Mercer hit 60% of shots compared with 33% of Lewis. He also had a higher percentage of the total number of shots, 59% versus 44%. Lewis himself called this fight the hardest fight of his career.
Revenge with Oliver McCall
In February 1997, a fight for the vacant WBC belt took place. Ironically, Lewis’s adversary was his only offender, Oliver McCall . In the 2nd round, McCall shocked Lewis, but failed to finish him off. In round 3, Lewis struck several hard hits that stopped McCall's constant attacks. After the 3rd round, McCall began to walk around the ring. In the 4th round, McCall almost did not defend himself, he began to walk around the ring with his hands down, missed a lot, but did not fall. It seemed that McCall was intoxicated. Referee Mills Lane suggested to him, then repeated the same thing in his corner, saying that if this continues, he will stop the fight. In the 5th round, Lane's patience ended, and the fight was stopped - a technical knockout in favor of Lewis. After the fight, McCall said that his plan was to walk around the ring: he wanted to mislead Lewis, and then knock out his opponent.
In July 1997, Lewis met with the unbeaten spoiler Henry Akinwande (32-0-1). Akinwande, like McCall, avoided the fight, only did it through clinching. Mills Lane disqualified Akinwande in the 5th round.
Fight with Andrew Golota
In October 1997, a Lewis fight against Pole Andrzej Golota took place. Lewis almost immediately attacked Golota. In the 2nd minute of the 1st round, he locked a pole in the corner, and held several strong right crosses in a row in the jaw, and then added a couple of hooks from both hands. Golota fell. He stood up with crazy eyes, and suddenly ran to the side. Joe Cortes hurried after him and stopped him. Because of this, the referee considered longer than the prescribed 10 seconds. The Pole did not express readiness to continue the fight, and clearly did not recover, but Joe Cortes allowed the fight to continue. Lewis pounced on Golota again. Golota stood in one place, not even trying to get away from the attack. Lewis spent a series of powerful crosses on both hands, driving the Pole into a corner. Then Lewis spent another series of punches, mainly from the right hand. Golota collapsed in the corner. In March 1998, Lewis met with asthmatic Shannon Briggs . In a previous battle, Briggs controversially defeated George Foreman . Briggs managed to hook Lewis coolly with the left hook at the beginning of the battle, but he could not use it, for which he paid. In rounds 4 and 5, Lewis sent the opponent several times to the floor. In the last seconds, the weakened Briggs could no longer defend himself and the referee stopped the fight.
In September 1998, the British held a mandatory defense against an unbroken Croat with the hair of Chingachguk Zhelko Mavrovich . Lewis is not too prepared for the fight. In the 7th round, Mavrovich managed to shock Lewis, but failed to finish him off. Lewis won by unanimous decision, although his points victory did not look impressive. After this fight, Mavrovich left boxing.
Unification fight with Evander Holyfield I
In March 1999, a unifying battle of two legends took place - Lewis and Evander Holyfield . The Briton dominated the entire fight, hitting more blows than Holyfield generally threw, but the judges unexpectedly gave a draw. It was one of the most scandalous decisions in the history of boxing. A rematch was appointed. The famous promoter Don King after the fight said that if no one was knocked out, then this is a draw. Unification fight with Evander Holyfield II
In November 1999, Lewis and Holyfield met again. Ironically, this time Holyfield looked better than in the 1st battle, but this was not enough to win. According to some experts, Holyfield was better, but the judges awarded the victory to Lennox Lewis by unanimous decision. Lewis was stripped of the WBA title for refusing to meet with mandatory challenger John Ruiz .
Fight Michael Grant
In April 2000, Lewis met promising Michael Grant (31-0). He attacked him as well as Golota. Grant knocked down three times in the 1st round, and once in the 2nd. At the end of the 2nd round, Lewis knocked out the challenger with a right uppercut [27] .
In July 2000, the Briton in the 2nd round knocked out shockless South African Francois Bothot [28] [29] .
In November 2000, Lewis entered the ring against the very strong and popular knockout David Tua . The battle began with an explosive attack by Tua. Lewis tried in every possible way to evade the battle, by retreating back. At the end of the 2nd round, Lewis restrained the strongest blow to the head from the opponent and dropped his hands, after which a gong sounded, which saved him from a further attack by Tua. Second defeat. Fight with Hasim Rahman
In April 2001, Lewis entered the ring against Hasim Rahman . It was a voluntary defense. At the end of the 5th round, Rahman threw the left jab into the head several times. Lewis walked to the ropes. Revenge with Hasim Rahman

Fight with Vitali Klitschko
