Biography

The son of a pastor, at the request of his father received a religious education, but preferred an acting career. In 1777 he moved to Gotu , becoming an actor in a theater under the direction of Konrad Ekhof . After the death of Eckhoff, in 1779 he accepted the invitation of the Mannheim Theater , where he became a popular actor, later he began to visit the cities of Germany with tours. In 1792 he became the main director of the theater.

In 1796, at the invitation of Goethe, he visited Berlin, in 1798 became the director of the Berlin Royal National Theater , and since 1811 he became the main director of all theatrical court performances.

He wrote plays, the most famous of which are Die Jäger, Dienstpflicht, Die Advokaten, Die Mündel and Die Hagstolzen, as well as critical articles in the Almanach für Theater and Theaterfreunde.

In the years 1798-1802, a 16-volume collection of his works “Dramatischen Werke” was published, including his autobiography. In 1807-1809 two volumes of the Neue dramatische Werke were published. Selected works were published in two (Leipzig, 1827-1828) and ten volumes (Leipzig, 1844 and 1860). The book of memoirs “My Theatrical Field” (1798, published in 1885).

In 1864, a bronze portrait of Iffland was installed on the facade of the Mannheim Theater.
