The magazine began its history with the pilot release of Linux Answers in 1999. After success among buyers, it was decided to establish a periodical called Linux Format [1] . The first magazine was published in May 2000.

The magazine has several national publications, including Italy, Greece and Russia. [2] Most of the print run is also distributed worldwide, mainly to the United States.

Articles typically focus on installation and configuration guides, as well as how users can use Linux-based operating systems and their programs.

Russian edition

The Russian edition began to be published in September 2005 , being the Russian-language version of the British magazine of the same name, however, a significant part of the materials are original articles by Russian authors, in particular, affecting the specifics of using Linux in Russia. For example, under the heading “Implementation of open source software in Russia” [3], government documents are published that are relevant to the promotion of free and open source software in Russia.

The volume of the magazine is 112 pages (since September 2009), the format is A4 + (since February 2009, the format is A4). Each number comes with a DVD- ROM, which contains both free programs for Linux and Windows , as well as entire distributions of various free operating systems. It is published in Russia with a circulation of 3,000 copies. Since 2009, a subscription to the electronic version of the journal (in PDF format) is available.

Numbers 18 months and older were available for free download in PDF format [4] . Also, a wiki- site Linux Format was created, which contains the materials of the journal, laid out for free access, in the wiki-markup, which allows readers to correct the noticed shortcomings, make clarifications, update these materials.

Editor-in-chief of the Russian version: Kirill Stepanov .

It is announced that the Russian edition of the magazine ceases to exist in 2019 [5] [6] .
