The “unfinished play for a mechanical piano” was filmed in Pushchino, Moscow Region, on the banks of the Oka River , where half a kilometer from the hotel there was a half-abandoned mansion of the Artsybashevs (XVIII century) with a two-story stone house, a park of overgrown alleys and flowering ponds.

Story
In the summer, guests gather at the estate of General Widow Anna Petrovna Voynitseva: Dr. Triletsky, Mr. Petrin (the mistress of the hostess), Porfiry Semenovich Glagoliev (the admirer of Anna Petrovna), Platonov’s neighbors - Mikhail Vasilyevich with his wife Sashenka, another neighbor, creditor Pavel Petrovich Shcherbuk and his daughters nephew Petechka. Stepson Voynitsevoy Serge presents guests his wife Sophia, in which Mikhail Vasilievich Platonov recognizes his former love.
Society is having fun, playing forfeits ... Only Platonov regularly tries to start a conversation about the insignificance of each specific human existence.
In the evening, during the fireworks, Mikhail Vasilievich explains with Sophia. As a result, Sophia is ready to abandon her husband and begin with Mikhail Vasilyevich a “clean new life”. But Mikhail Vasilievich is not ready for such a turn. Confused in his feelings, he throws himself from a low cliff into the river, but the water in the river is knee-deep. His wife, with tears in her eyes, tells Platonov that she loves him.
In the finale, all the characters roam the meadow in spacious white robes and meet the dawn. The film ends with a sleeping boy smiling at something in the rays of the rising sun.

Nikita Mikhalkov offered the role of generals Anna Petrovna Lyudmila Gurchenko , but when shooting the musical “Mom” Gurchenko broke her leg and therefore was forced to abandon the shooting in Mikhalkov’s film [1] .
Yevgeny Steblov was originally approved for the role of Triletsky, but before the shooting, the actor got into an accident and was hospitalized. Alexander Adabashyan persuaded to play this role of Mikhalkov himself, who was the same height with Steblov [1] .
