Biography

Matthias Bernard Brown was born on February 24, 1684 in the commune of Sautens near Innsbruck (now the Austrian state of Tyrol ). The fifth child of nine in the family of the blacksmith Yakub Brown and Magdalene. The younger brother Dominic became an artist, his nephew Antonin Brown - a famous sculptor.

Studied sculpture in Salzburg . Thanks to the monks of the Cistercian monastery in Stams, he traveled to Italy, where he visited Venice, Bologna and Rome and was influenced by Bernini and Michelangelo .

Around 1710, he founded the largest workshop in Prague, where six apprentices worked, the same year his first work in Prague, Vision of St. Luitgard on Charles Bridge , dates back to the same year.

He had five children, but none of them followed in his footsteps.

Matthias Bernard Brown died on February 15, 1738 in Prague from tuberculosis . He was buried in the church of St. Stephen in Nove Mesto .

There is an asteroid named Matthiasbraun (number 6768), discovered in 1983.
