Waterspoon, Jeremy

Jeremy Lee Wotherspoon ( born October 26, 1976 ) is a Canadian skater . Silver medalist of the 1998 Olympic Games at a distance of 500 m, 4-time world champion in sprint all-around (1999-2001, 2003) and 4-time world champion in individual distances (1 time at a distance of 1000 m in 2001, and 3 times at a distance 500 m in 2003, 2004 and 2008). Member of the four Olympic Games (1998-2010).

Biography

Initially, I ran both on the large oval and on the small oval. At 17, he moved to Calgary and began to train with the Canadian team.

He won a silver medal at the 1998 Olympics in Nagano at a distance of 500 m, losing to the Japanese Shimizu . In his long career, this medal became his only Olympic.

At the 2002 Olympics in Salt Lake City, he was considered the main favorite at a distance of 500 m, but a fall in the first attempt did not allow him to win a medal, although in the second attempt he showed the best result.

He failed at the 2006 Olympics in Turin, becoming 9th at 500m and 11th at 1000m. He was very disappointed with his performance and went to live on a Norwegian island near the Arctic Circle to spend time alone. A year and a half did not compete

Returning to sports, on November 9, 2007, at the age of 31, he began to win again, setting a new world record at a distance of 500 m - 34.03 seconds.

In December 2009, he announced that he would end his sports career after the Olympics in Vancouver, where he became 9th at 500m. At the end of his sports career, he began to work as a coach.

June 4, 2013 announced his return to the sport and the intention to take part in the Olympics in Sochi. It will be trained under the guidance of its long-term rival on the track - Jan Bos [2] .

World Records

Waterspoon repeatedly set world records for 500 and 1,000 meters. He is the world record holder in the sum of two 500-meter distances, and also single-handedly from 1997 to 2012 he was the world champion in the sprint all-around, in which he exceeded his achievement 5 times. [3]

As of March 13, 2011 he is an athlete who has established the six fastest laps in the history of speed skating, the best result is 24.32 s. [four]
